Lord Bacaro Volorus was a Cyro-Breton philanthropist and founder of the Society of the Steadfast, which provided aid to the hungry, as well as sanctuary and rehabilitation to the victims of the Three Banners War.[1][2] Bacaro's Imperial heritage came from his father of House Volorus of Cyrodiil, and his Breton roots came from his mother of House Merchad. His Steadfast Society's symbol consisted of Stendarr's symbol with three pouring chalices which was reminiscent of the symbol of his mother's noble house, but the Imperial Red Diamond was also used.[3][4][5][6]
Volorus was secretly the Ascendant Lord, leader of the Ascendant Order, a Breton-influenced terrorist organization that likened themselves to knights.[UOL 1] He wished that one day chroniclers would look back at what he hoped to accomplish, and see that him operating by an ends justify the means basis was a necessity.[7] Volorus' ultimate goal was to become the new Druid King, destroy the alliances responsible for the Three Banners War, and replace the fallen Empire with his own "Ivy Throne".[8]
As the Ascendant Lord, Bacaro was extremely well trained and exceedingly skilled at martial combat.[9][UOL 2] Upon becoming a false Druid King, he merged with the Spirit of Mount Firesong and commanded its powers. The Vestige confronted him at Mount Firesong, defeating Volorus and saving the Systres from destruction.[10][11] The Ascendant Order had amassed a treasure trove when they were active, and when it was raided, a sculpted statue of the Ascendant Lord was discovered among the treasure which captured his might and presence perfectly.[12]
HistoryEdit
Bacaro was originally from Cyrodiil, his father's bloodline being of sprawling House Volorus which had roots in the province. During the Colovian Revolt, House Volorus suffered heavy loses. Bacaro also lost his partner and children during the conflict, making him fall into deep grief. He found some footing during his grief when he turned to philanthropy and donated from his fortune to charities. He founded the Society of the Steadfast, a humanitarian organization as a response to the Three Banners War, which offered aid to the common folk affected by the continent-wide war.[1]
Lord Bacaro later settled in his holdings on the Systres and overtime, built goodwill through his Steadfast Society. He also created the Ascendant Order, which gained traction among the common folk across Tamriel whose lives were ruined by the destruction caused by the Three Banners War. Bacaro and his Ascendant Magus recruited them with promises that they would bring down Tamriel's tyrants who grow richer and powerful at the expense of misery and bloodshed.[7][13] They infiltrated nearly every level of Breton society,[14] and had established the Systres Archipelago as their main base of operations. In truth, Bacaro planned to leverage the reputation he gained through the Steadfast Society to lure the major players responsible for the Three Banners War to their deaths. The Ascendant Order subsequently failed to assassinate these major players when they visited High Isle for peace talks initiated by Bacaro.[15][16]
Concurrently, the druids on Galen were involved in a civil war orchestrated by Bacaro's unwitting pawn, Archdruid Orlaith of the Firesong Circle. When Orlaith failed to become the Druid King and forcibly unify the druids under one banner, Bacaro took matters into his own hands. Ultimately, Bacaro was also a member of House Merchad through his mother's bloodline, a noble house with ties to the last Druid King, Kasorayn. As its last living descendent, he felt it was his birthright to claim the Ivy Throne of the Druid King, and use it to replace the corruption of the Ruby Throne.[8] The Vestige confronted Bacaro at Mount Firesong, where he had ascended into a false Druid King. Utilizing his newfound power, Bacaro enslaved the dormant spirit of the volcano, which was capable of decimating Tamriel's armies.[17] However, Volorus was defeated, saving the archipelago from destruction.[10][11]
Although the peace talks were initially a trap set by Lord Bacaro, the Steadfast Society were kept in the dark about his plans and had no involvement with the Ascendant Order. Even with Lord Bacaro gone, they continued his original vision of helping those suffering from war and disaster. As Lord Bacaro had set up a trust many years ago, the society was self-sufficient, and they continued to sponsor the peace talks and take care of all the expenses.[18]
The significance of Bacaro led to him being documented within the Infinite Archive in Apocrypha. There, copies of various entities were subsequently created as maligraphies, creatures composed of vivified ink manifested by stories from books, and served as mindless extensions of the Daedric Lord Tho'at Replicanum. A maligraphy copy of Bacaro during his false Druid King ascension was formed, which was destroyed by an adventurer or two who were aided by augmentations directly from Hermaeus Mora.[19][20][21]
