Hobs are a race of hairless monkey-like creatures of unclear origin, who inhabited the floating island Umbriel.[1][2] They have long arms and legs, and very long, thin, delicate fingers. Their faces are described as goblinesque, with huge toothless mouths and large green eyes.[1]:Part 1, Chapter 8
Hobs can speak very simple Tamrielic, though they seem to have their own language as well.[1]:Part 3, Chapter 10 They were used as assistants by chefs in the kitchens of Umbriel, and were usually tasked with fetching specific ingredients. Troops of them could sometimes be found harvesting bloodball fruit in the Marrow Sump.[1]:Part 3, Chapter 1 Supposedly, some chefs would train their Hobs to perform "unconventional" favors for them.[1]:Part 2, Chapter 4
Their exact origins are unclear as many of the species that inhabited Umbriel came from Tamriel and Oblivion alike. It was unknown whether the Hobs of Umbriel were creatures that reproduced or grew in a normal way, or if they were grown from proforms like the other people of Umbriel.[1]:Part 3, Chapter 10 Like the rest of the inhabitants of Umbriel, the Hobs ended up in the Realm of the Hist when Umbriel found itself there, and presumably made it their home.[2]
Hobs are potentially the namesake of Hob's Fall Cave, an icy cave found in the Ice Fields of Winterhold.[3]
