Statuette of a Dog

The Statuette of a Dog is a quest item received after starting Clavicus Vile's quest. After the quest is concluded, it will automatically leave your inventory, just as it entered it. It is considered a miscellaneous item. In appearance it is a stone statue of a dog, sitting down, with its head looking downwards.

The large statue of a dog beside Clavicus Vile will disappear from its statue base and appear in your inventory, asking you to not return Umbra to Vile. The statue itself represents Barbas, the hound of Clavicus Vile.

Quest-Related EventsEdit

After accepting the quest from Clavicus Vile, Barbas will leave the statue base and join you in your inventory. You will hear him shortly after this occurs, making a case to not do this quest.

"Hello? Hey! Pay attention! In your pack. The dog. I swear, you heroes aren't particularly quick on the uptake.... Good. Got your attention. I'm Barbas, the Hound of Clavicus Vile. Not that I've always been a hound, or always been called Barbas. I've also been a Redguard. For a while I was a scamp, making deals with Orcs. But, for now, I am His Hound, and I serve the Lord Clavicus. A word of advice here. You've made a bad deal. This Umbra -- bad business. Things always end badly where that one's concerned. Clavicus has always been a little blind to that. And it'll end badly this time, too. So, just leave things be. Walk away. It's your best bet, really."

If you decide to ignore his suggestion and go to Umbra, he will plead with you again to drop this quest:

"This is your out, friend. Leave it alone. How about we just march on back to the shrine and tell Clavicus the deal is off? Sure, he'll be a bit put off, but you won't be dead. At least, you probably won't. That's better odds than you're getting here."

If you do so, Barbas will be pleased, and tell you to return to Clavicus and tell him the deal is off:

"Good move, kid. Some things are better left alone. Let's get back to the Shrine. I'll smooth things over with the big guy. I'm sure he'll understand."

However, if you ignore him and successfully retrieve Umbra, he will make a final case for keeping it for yourself instead:

"I'm telling you: don't bring that sword back to Clavicus. It'll ruin him, I'm sure. I mean, not completely: He's still a Daedra Prince and all that. Look, keep the sword if you want. That's your decision. But don't give it back to Clavicus. He doesn't know what's good for him sometimes. "

This is a rather good option for you, as Umbra is one of the best weapons in the game. Not returning to Clavicus with the sword means it will remain a quest item, meaning you get one of the best weapons in the game without the normal encumbrance it brings. You can still return to Clavicus Vile and keep the sword, but that just means losing its quest-item status. Your decision at this point depends on whether or not you want to keep the sword, or get the Masque of Clavicus Vile.

If you decide to return to Clavicus Vile with the sword, whether or not your return it to him, the quest will conclude. As you do so, Barbas will leave your inventory and reappear on the statue base, sending you one final message:

"Oh, well. Been good knowing you, kid. Back to being His Hound for me. As for you... good luck, I guess. I've met worse."

NotesEdit

The dropped version of the statue
  • Although it cannot be dropped under normal circumstances as it is a quest item, if you were able to do so it would appear as a pink version of the statue.
  • There are two versions of this item. One item can be moved and manipulated if dropped, while the other one cannot and will float in the air.
  • Barbas also appears in Skyrim.
