We tried. Believe me. Everyone held onto their spirits for as long as they could. But when the ground crumbled around us and the channelers blocked our path, we broke ranks. I wish we did something else, anything else.
Half the force you left here retreated and half went forward to meet the enemy. Neither survived very long.
I'm only alive because they want me to be. It's the suffering. They'll wring me dry of all the pain I can muster and only then let me go. A punishment, I suppose. I didn't choose either path and stood in the middle.
Captain, don't tell my family what you saw when you found me. That's my only request.
