Another Death in OntusEdit

You can start the quest either by finding the Constable Seeks Deputy notice, or speaking with her directly at the graveyard.

As you approach her she can be found speaking to one of the gravestones:

Constable Yabren: "I will bring your murderer to justice, father. This I swear."

Talk with her to see what is going on:

Started quest from Constable Seeks Deputy:
Otherwise:
"You've come to the town of Ontus at an unfortunate time, traveler. I myself have only just returned. Coming home to bury one's father is never an easy thing."
I'm here about the job posting. But did I hear you say your father was murdered?
(?)
"What other explanation is there? My father Ulbren was town constable. He wrote to me about investigating some suspicious deaths, then suddenly I get a letter telling me he had died.
I requested leave from the Legion and returned as fast as I could."
Do you have proof that your father was murdered?
"Not yet. First, I volunteered to replace him as constable. Then I had to make the arrangements to bury him.
With multiple deaths to investigate, I need to hire a deputy. So, what do you say, traveler. Interested in the job?"
I'll help you investigate the suspicious deaths in Ontus.
"Your first task is to familiarize yourself with what's happening here. The graveyard is a good place to start. Notice the number of recent markers and the similar causes of death.
Go on. We can talk again after you examine the newer grave markers."

Before you check out the new graves, you can ask Yabren about Ontus:

Tell me about this town, Yabren.
"Ontus attracts workers from both the Highlands and Hammerfell. It's known for its prosperous ranch, and the quarry has made a fortune supplying Cyrodiil with stone to repair keeps on all sides of the war.
As a legionary, I'm not thrilled about that."
You're a legionary?
"I was. Still am, I suppose. My commanding officer granted me leave to put my father's affairs in order. When that's done … then I'll decide if I'm still needed here or if my place is back with the West Weald Legion."

You can read the following gravestones, Dalenn Forster, Evanoa Harklin, Gelw Vashreef and Ulbren af-Ander. Once you have done this, Constable Yabren will ask to hear your thoughts:

Constable Yabren: "Come. Tell me your thoughts, deputy."

Speak with Constable Yabren to explain your thoughts:

"You examined the newest grave markers. Give me your impressions, deputy."
Other than your father, all the recent deaths were laborers. Ranchers and quarry workers both.
"Indeed. My father wrote that both the ranch and the quarry were working their laborers very hard of late. But prior to this, I never heard of a fever that strikes down strong, healthy workers in the prime of their lives.
They call it fatigue fever."
And this fatigue fever is blamed for all these deaths, including your father?
"So the town leaders would have everyone believe. My father made no mention of feeling unwell in his last letter. It was dated the same day he died. He often wrote to me about his investigations. Said it helped him think through all the permutations."
Did his letter say anything else that can help with our investigation?
"Just that he was baffled. He described fatigue fever as a strange illness that was killing workers, but he had a feeling there was more involved in the deaths. He suspected foul play, and so do I.
All right, enough chatter. Let's get back to it."
What do you want me to do next?
"Talk to some of the townsfolk. They may be more willing to open up to a stranger than to me. You'd be surprised what ordinary folk pick up on when those in power fail to notice."
All right. Anyone in specific you think I should talk to?
"My father's letter said he was planning to question Ghrakug at the Stonechip, Ranch Overseer Merrarq, and Quarry Boss Laurina. Let's start where he left off and talk to them.
Then, check my father's office. I … I haven't been able do that yet."

You can continue talking to her to ask more questions:

What should I ask these townsfolk about?
"Just see what they have to say about recent events. The deaths of their fellow workers, my father …. What they think about fatigue fever.
My father must have assumed they had something to tell him. We need to follow up on that."
Why do you want me to check your father's office?
"My father's office … my office now, I suppose. It's been unoccupied since he died. I know I need to go in there. Take stock of things. But … it's hard.
If you could see if anything related to our investigation stands out, I'd appreciate it."

You can then recover Constable Ulbren's Notebook from his office and interview the three people that Yabren mentioned, Ghrakug will be much more forthcoming than the other two. Once this has been done, Constable Yabren will be waiting for you outside the Constable's Station.

Speak with her to inform her what you found:

"Deputy. Were you able to interview the townsfolk I suggested?"
They confirmed the seriousness of fatigue fever, but they claimed to know nothing about any crimes.
"Hmm. I wonder what my father hoped to get out of talking to them. I know this is all tied to fatigue fever, I just don't know how.
What about the constable's office? Did you find anything important there?"
Here. I found this in your father's desk.
"My father's notebook? It describes how productivity increased lately at both the quarry and the ranch. Interesting. And he mentions how the town healer died suddenly before she could share her findings.
Two suspicious deaths that break the pattern."
What are you thinking?
"That two healthy people not connected to the ranch or quarry were suddenly inflicted with fatigue fever and died faster than any other victims.
My father planned to talk to Baron Carvain and Lady Raxalee next. Do that while I investigate the healer."
I'll go talk to Baron Carvain and Lady Raxalee.

You can speak with both nobles who are adamant that the disease effecting their workers is unfortunate but not suspicious. Afterwards when you head over to the Stonechip Tavern, Constable Yabren will not be there. Instead Ghrakug, will pass on a message from her. Constable Yabren discovered a potential lead at the healer's house, and has asked that you search both of the nobles' residences—Carvain Manor and Raxalee Tower—and that she would meet you there.

Exploring both buildings, you will find various documents that cast suspicion on the Lady and Baron. They tell a story of an unsual stone found in Raxalee Quarry that was discovered to have several effects on the body when turned into a elixir. Baron Carvain and Lady Raxalee took advantage of this to increase productivity of their workers. They were also concerned by the inquiries by Healer Nevama and Constable Ulbren. A common thread is the mention of Alchemist Surius and Zeggar's Blind.

Once you find the last document, Constable Yabren will arrive nearby as your follower:

Constable Yabren: "Ah, there you are. We should investigate Zeggar's Blind next."

You can speak with her before continuing:

"I'm interested in what you found and you can tell me on the way. I want to check out Zeggar's Blind. I heard more than one of the hired mercenaries mention the name as I made my way to find you.
It's just to the northeast of the town."

When you enter Zeggar's Blind, Constable Yabren will be waiting:[verification needed — will she be inside or outside the cave?]

Constable Yabren: "Good, you found it. Place used to be crawling with Goblins. Let's see what's in here now."

Talking with her here:

"My father wanted to clear this place out, but it was never a priority for the town leaders. Let's see what Carvain and Raxalee have hidden down here."

Climbing the cave river using the plank path, you reach the hideout that has various Carvain Rowdies to deal with. As you explore, Constable Yabren will notice something:

Constable Yabren: "There's a key sitting on that desk. Take it and see if it unlocks any of the drawers."

Once you take the key and test it:

Constable Yabren: "Hmm. Not for that desk? Then let's find the lock that key opens."

Talking with her afterwards:

"Something is very wrong in the town of Ontus. I feel it in my bones."

Further along, Constable Yabren will notice another desk:

Constable Yabren: "Over there! Try the key in that desk."

This time the key will work and you will find the letter Your Services Are Required. It is addressed to Alchemist Surius and proves that Carvain and Raxalee employed his skills to murder Constable Ulbren and Healer Nevama. But more urgently, they have enlisted his services now to do the same to Ghrakug and you. As for Constable Yabren, they plan to frame her for the fatigue fever instead.

Constable Yabren is understandably perturbed:

Constable Yabren: "They're after us! And Ghrakug! I'll go warn him. You destroy this alchemical equipment."
<Constable Yabren leaves.>

You then destroy the alchemical equipment and in the process draw Alchemist Surius out to fight. Afterwards you race to the Stonechip Gambling Den, there is no one there except a greviously injured Ghrakug. Talking to him, he explains that as soon as Constable Yabren arrived a group of mercenaries burst in and dragged Constable Yabren off to the Ontus Reservoir.

When you enter the Ontus Reservoir, you will find Constable Yabren chained up. Meanwhile, Baron Carvain and Lady Raxalee will be having their bodyguards Rowdy Tharden and Mercenary Adder prepping barrels to dump the fever causing elixir into the water supply:

Baron Carvain: "Agree to sign the confession, Yabren. My patience won't last forever."
Constable Yabren: "Over here! Get me out of these bonds!"
Lady Raxalee: "Give me that. I'll sign her damn name! In case you haven't noticed, we've got company."
Baron Carvain: "The deputy! Mercenaries, kill them and dump the elixir into the reservoir! Come, Raxalee. We need to get out of here."

Once you have freed Constable Yabren she will chase after the nobles:

Constable Yabren: "Deputy, you stop the mercenaries. I'll go after Carvain and Raxalee."

You then need to fight Rowdy Tharden and Mercenary Adder. Once you defeat them, you can chase after Constable Yabren and find she has successfully captured them.

Constable Yabren: "That's far enough, baron!"
<She notices you arrive.>
Constable Yabren: "I've got them. What happened at the reservoir, deputy?"

Tell her what happened:

"I can't believe I allowed myself to get captured by this bunch. If my fellow legionaries hear about this ….
But tell me, did you stop the mercenaries from polluting the reservoir with the remaining elixir?"
Yes. I defeated the mercenaries. They didn't have a chance to dump the barrels of elixir.
"Good. And we have enough evidence to implicate them, not only in the deaths of Healer Nevama and my father, but in the deaths of all those workers.
Their alchemist created an elixir that made the workers more productive, but at a terrible cost."
I need to tell you, Ghraguk [sic] didn't make it. He died from his wounds.
"That's another death to lay at their feet, and all in the name of profit.
They planned to destroy the town, blame it all on me, and run off with their ill-gotten gold. I'm just glad you were here to help stop them."
What happens now, Constable Yabren?

Leaving and returning to the conversation at this point:

"Baron Carvain and Lady Raxalee will pay for their crimes. And Ontus will survive, despite all the death and suffering they caused just to make a profit.
I couldn't have done it without you, deputy."
What happens now, Constable Yabren?
"I'll present the evidence we collected to the magistrate in Skingrad. Help determine who takes over the ranch and quarry. Ontus needs those businesses to continue, though without the danger of fatigue fever.
Here's your pay, deputy, with my thanks."

After completing the quest:

"I hope my father can rest easier now. I finished what he started and brought the murderers to justice. I'll see them get whatever punishment the magistrate deems acceptable, whether life in a dungeon or the executioner's blade.
Thanks again, deputy."
What about you? Will you stay in Ontus or return to the Legion?
"That's a good question. I haven't quite decided yet. I want to stick around long enough to wrap this all up. See Carvain and Raxalee face justice. Help decide the future of the ranch and quarry.
Beyond that? We'll just have to see."
I'm moving on. Will you hire a new deputy?
"Hmm. I might have to. I'll need help rounding up the rest of the mercenaries at the ranch and the quarry. Damn it, there's a lot to do before I can figure out what's next for me.
If you wander this way again, know that Ontus will always welcome you."

In Memory OfEdit

If you completed the Ontus Objective, Constable Yabren will be at the gathering in Beragon's Townhouse:

"Deputy. Good to see you. I'm surprised you didn't ask for a larger salary, considering what I now know of your reputation.
I'm glad to see you were able to help all of West Weald, not just solve my problems in Ontus."
Have you decided to leave the Legion and remain constable of Ontus?
"I haven't settled one way or another. But there's still a lot I need to do, so I'll remain constable for a little while longer.
Whatever I decide, Ontus will be better off without the baron and Lady Raxalee putting elixirs in the food supply."
